In this work my return to using cast rubber is an effort to let the material- floppy and undeniable at the same time- complete the narrative.

The border pieces relinquish a certain amount of control to the cast rubber in order to enable the border to seek it’s own territory. The borders possess their own integrity and in turn become more dominant than the space they define. The decorative, in translation, becomes the dominant.

Block Bloom developed out of an interest to translate the idea of a lily, fragile and fragrant, into the more aggressive presence of rubber. Although the flowers succumb to the floor, they offer a sense of anticipation and force. The blocks anchor the stems and expand the reading of the piece by adding critical mass. I cast one in black and one in cream to expose the ability of the rubber to remain an undeniable yet emotional force in the work.

These pieces all possess qualities of oppositions that drive my efforts in the studio. They reflect a sense of anticipation and competitive behavior that I see in my relationship to self.
